What is Holy Week in the Orthodox Church?

Holy Week is the most sacred and intense week of the Orthodox Christian year. Unlike many other Christian traditions that treat Holy Week as a single important day (such as Good Friday or Easter Sunday), we walk day by day with Christ through the final events of His earthly life. Each service follows the actual sequence of the Gospel accounts — from the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, through the Last Supper, the betrayal, the Crucifixion, and into the silence of the tomb — culminating in the radiant celebration of His Resurrection at Pascha (Orthodox Easter). The services are longer, deeply immersive, and rich with ancient hymns, Scripture readings, and symbolic actions that help the faithful not just remember, but spiritually participate in Christ’s Passion and victory over death.
