Frequently Asked Questions
Can I attend services if I’m not Orthodox?
Absolutely. All are welcome to attend our services and experience the beauty of Orthodox worship. We ask that visitors join us respectfully in prayer and reverence.
Do I need to make an appointment to visit the Skete?
While visitors are welcome at scheduled services, we ask that all non-liturgical visits be arranged in advance. Please contact us to schedule a time.
What is a Skete? How is it different from a monastery?
A Skete is a small monastic community focused on prayer and quiet work, often more secluded than a traditional monastery. Our life is rooted in simplicity, liturgy, and hospitality.
Can I become a catechumen or be received into the Church here?
Yes. Please reach out to us to begin the conversation. We’ll arrange time for spiritual guidance, preparation, and instruction. Even though we’re a monastic community, we are a full Parish and do everything a Parish does.
Do I need to understand everything before I start attending?
No. The services may seem unfamiliar at first, and that’s okay. Simply being present, listening, and praying quietly is a good place to begin. You’ll learn in time.
What should I wear to church?
Dress respectfully and modestly. For men, slacks and a collared shirt are appropriate. For women, dresses or skirts of modest length are typical, and a head covering is traditional and encouraged.
Can I receive Communion or other sacraments if I’m not Orthodox?
No. Only baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christians in good standing may receive the Eucharist. However, you’re warmly welcome to receive a blessing and participate in the prayers.
Are there materials I can read or watch to learn more about Orthodoxy?
Yes. We’re happy to recommend books, videos, and talks for inquirers. Ask us in person or via the contact form, and we’ll gladly send you a list. In the meantime, you can follow our weekly Video Podcast on YouTube here.
How long does it take to become Orthodox?
There’s no fixed timeline. Some are received after months of preparation, others after years. It depends on your background, desire, and readiness. The process is pastoral, not rushed.
Can I bring my children?
Yes. Children are always welcome. Orthodox worship can seem lengthy, but many families attend together. You’re free to step out and return as needed.
Is the Orthodox Church different from Catholicism or Protestantism?
Yes. While we share some roots, the Orthodox Church maintains the fullness of the ancient Christian faith, unaltered by later developments in the West. We’re always glad to explain more in conversation.
What is the next step if I’m interested in learning more?
Just reach out. You don’t need to commit to anything. Attend services, ask questions, and begin to pray. We’ll walk the journey with you, one step at a time.
